About the Role
We are partnering with a well-established insurance organization to recruit a Commercial Underwriter to support the assessment and management of commercial insurance risks. This role is well suited for an underwriting professional who enjoys analytical work, sound decision-making, and building strong relationships with broker partners.
The Commercial Underwriter will be responsible for underwriting new business, renewals, and policy amendments in accordance with underwriting guidelines and delegated authority. This position plays an important role in supporting profitable growth while ensuring risk selection aligns with the organization’s appetite and standards.
This opportunity exists due to ongoing business needs within the underwriting team. Success in this role requires strong technical knowledge, attention to detail, and the ability to balance risk assessment with service-oriented communication.
Key Responsibilities
• Review, assess, and underwrite new business submissions, renewals, and endorsements within delegated authority.
• Analyze risk information, financial data, and supporting documentation to determine acceptability and pricing.
• Apply underwriting guidelines, risk appetite, and regulatory requirements to underwriting decisions.
• Communicate underwriting decisions, terms, and conditions clearly to broker partners.
• Collaborate with brokers to obtain additional information and structure appropriate coverage solutions.
• Manage an assigned portfolio of commercial accounts, supporting retention and profitability.
• Ensure underwriting files are accurately documented and maintained within internal systems.
• Respond to coverage, pricing, and policy-related inquiries from internal and external stakeholders.
• Support internal teams with underwriting expertise and guidance as required.
• Stay current on market trends, product developments, and underwriting best practices.
Qualifications & Experience
• 3–6 years of experience in commercial underwriting or commercial insurance broking.
• Strong knowledge of commercial property and casualty insurance products.
• CIP designation or progress toward completion is preferred.
• Sound analytical and decision-making skills with strong attention to detail.
• Effective communication skills and the ability to build professional broker relationships.
• Organized, reliable, and comfortable managing multiple files and deadlines.
• Proficient with Microsoft Office and underwriting or policy administration systems.
Compensation and Benefits
Base salary typically ranging from $70,000 to $90,000, depending on experience and credentials.
